A sales lady is one who works in the retail field. They can sell a range of products and services, including automobiles, apparel, electronics or shoes. Sales ladies often work during the week, and may be asked to work some evenings, weekends and during the holiday season. They have to perform several duties in order to close sales and meet company goals. In May 2008, the middle 50 per cent of sales ladies earned between £5.3 and £8.60 an hour, according to the United States Department of Labor.

Interacting with customers

Most of the time, sales ladies are greeting customers into the store, helping customers with their needs and answering questions related to purchases or products. Customers expect sales ladies to have knowledge on the products and services they offer. Sales ladies may also have to assist customers with selecting the right products. This can range from searching for a certain blouse to discussing the properties of different DVD players. Their responsibility is to make sure that the customers are satisfied with their purchases. It is important that sales ladies have excellent customer service and people skills.

Completing transactions

Another important responsibility of sales ladies is completing sales transactions. The process of completing transactions includes using a cash register, accepting customer payments and bagging merchandise. Sales ladies accept payments in the form of cash, check, debit card or credit card. They may even handle customer returns and exchanges. Sales ladies are also responsible for handling the cash in the register. This includes counting money and making sure there is enough money in the register. At the end of the day, sales ladies separate and count cash, receipts and credit card slips so that the register is ready for use the next day. To complete transactions, sales ladies need to have good basic math skills.

Demonstrating products

In order to increase sales within their company, sales ladies are responsible for demonstrating products. They need to have knowledge about the products they provide in the store. Duties for demonstrating products include showing how the product works, explaining additional features and giving information on prices or discounts. Sales ladies should also know how to operate a product in order to effectively demonstrate the product.
