Homemade house fly traps

Updated November 21, 2016

House flies are not only a nuisance while they are buzzing around your head, they also carry and spread germs and diseases. Insect sprays will kill house flies, but they are not safe to use around food, children or animals. Sticky flypaper will catch some of them, but it's unattractive. Making your own fly traps is inexpensive and uses natural ingredients that are not dangerous. What's more, they can be thrown away when you have finished with them.

Milk bottle fly trap

  1. Clean the plastic milk bottle with warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Cut five holes around the bottle in line with the centre of the handle. The holes need to be large enough for flies to enter the bottle.

  2. Combine 1/4 cup each of syrup and apple cider vinegar and mix well. Pour the mixture into the bottle.

  3. Fill the other half of the container with water. Place the cap on the bottle. Place the trap in an area where the fly population is high, and replace it with a new one or empty the used one and refill it when it becomes full with flies.

Homemade fly trap

  1. Poke several holes in the lid of a large glass jar, making sure the holes are large enough for flies to enter.

  2. Pour 2 cups water, 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup white vinegar into the jar and mix well.

  3. Place the lid on the jar and place it outdoors near a door where flies enter your home. The trap will draw flies away from your home, and entering the trap will kill them.

  4. Tip

Fill clear plastic bags 3/4 of the way with water and hang one above each side of a doorway. The reflection caused by the bags and water will confuse flies and cause them to fly away from the doorway rather than entering.
