Graduation is a special ceremony for your student, so it is important to show them how proud you are of them for their accomplishment. However, decorations and invitations can be expensive. Instead of blowing your whole budget on decorations, make your own paper graduation cap decorations and invitations so you can spend your party money on the things that count.

Wearable Graduation Cap

For the younger grades, the school does not provide graduation caps. Make your student's day by creating their own paper caps for them to wear to their graduation. A paper bowl that fits around your child's head and is painted in the school's colours is used for the cap. For the mortarboard, use a piece of cardstock that matches your painted bowl. Use a matching button to hold on the tassel, which is made from black or gold thread. Glue the mortarboard to the cap, and your child is ready to graduate in style.

Graduation Cap Lantern

For a fun and colourful addition to your party's graduation, use paper lanterns to draw attention. You can buy fairly inexpensive paper lanterns from a craft store and add a mortarboard to the top. If starting from a paper lantern, use card stock to create the mortarboard. Glue around the edges of your lantern and stick on the cardstock. Yarn or embroidery thread make realistic tassels and can be added to the edges of your cardstock. Add a button to the centre of the cardstock, attach a yarn loop, and hang it on a tree or chandelier for an eye-catching effect.

Graduation Cap Gift Box

You can create a graduation cap gift box using construction paper and card stock. Fold up a large piece of construction paper to create the mortar board. Hot glue the edges of the paper into a square, and add a smaller square of cardstock to the centre to cover the seams. A folded strip of construction paper will make the cap for your graduation cap. Write a personalised message onto the cardstock. A hole should be punched in a corner of your mortarboard and a tassel tied into it. Add bills curled up and wrapped with golden thread to look like a diploma, and use another piece of cardstock taped to the bottom to hold the money in.

Grad Cap Favors

Create a platter full of paper graduation caps and fill them with candies as party favours. Use a long strip of cardstock to create the base of your graduation cap. Hold the seam together with hot glue. Another piece of cardstock should be glued on for the mortar board. A metallic magic marker should be used to write the graduation year onto the top of the mortar board, beside the tassel. Fill the inside of the cap with candy. Tape another piece of cardboard over the opening to hold in the candy, and place them on a pyramid to be grabbed by the party guests.
