Homemade Wizard of Oz Lollipop Kid costume

Updated February 21, 2017

The Wizard of Oz Lollipop Kid costume is one of the easiest costumes to make at home. The variations of the costume leave you plenty of materials to work with, which you already may have around the house. No matter what clothes you choose to make the custom from, the important part is to have a gigantic lollipop to carry with you to finish it off. Dress up the whole family as the Lollipop Kids; this makes a great group costume theme.

Start with a pair of stripped leggings. These are hard to find outside of a costume shop, but easy to make at home. Purchase a pair of white leotards and make the stripes yourself using fabric paint or permanent magic marker. The stripes need to be black, red or blue and about two inches thick. Start at the ankle doing stripes of the same colour all the way up the lower leg, leaving a 5-cm (2-inch) white ring in between each one. Stop at a point just a little above the knee, since after that point the leg will be covered by shorts.

Take any pair of baggy trousers and cut them just below the knee. With scissors, cut a large saw tooth pattern all along the bottom. These do not need to be cut neatly; the more jagged the better for this costume.

Use a baggy long-sleeved men's collar shirt for the top of this costume. You can use any patterned shirt for this look--although a shirt that is darker like a plaid flannel shirt looks more realistic. Cut the sleeves in a sawtooth pattern so they are half way between the shoulder and the elbow. Cut the bottom of your shirt in a sawtooth pattern also and cut it short enough so it falls at your waist.

The collar needs to be white and double in size of the shirt's collar. Make a large collar out of white construction paper and staple it over the shirt's collar.

Hairstyle options

Pull back your fringe so your forehead is completely exposed and make a small ponytail on the top of your head as one option for long hair. Use a curling iron to set the ponytail into one curl. Tuck the rest of your hair under with clips so you look like you have a Dutch boy hairstyle. You can do the same with a wig if your hair is too short.

Curl your short fringe using mega hold hair gel for another option if your hair style allows. Make one large curl looking like a big wave and leave your forehead exposed.

Another option is not to do your hair at all and just use a piece of head gear. Put on a beanie cap that has a pinwheel on top of it instead of fussing with your hair.

Modify a baseball cap by putting a hole in the centre at the top and pulling a bunch of hair through it. Use a curling iron to give it one big curl and then mist it heavily with hairspray to keep it that way. This is yet another option for a hair style to be used with the Lollipop Kids costume.
