Homemade Princess Leia Costume

Updated February 21, 2017

Princess Leia, a well-known character from "Star Wars," is an excellent choice for an inventive and inexpensive costume. Whether for Halloween or a costume party, this get-up is comfortable and can be created from cheap items, many of which can be found in your home. Learn how to create the Princess Leia dress, accessories, make-up and classic hairstyle that will set your costume apart from all the others.

The most inexpensive, and easiest, Princess Leia costume to make at home is from "A New Hope," the first original "Star Wars" movie. In it, Princess Leia appears in a long flowing white dress with a silver belt and her classic two-bun hairstyle.

To create the dress, buy a long white robe that slips over your head or a cheap, flowing white dress. Use a white bed sheet if you can sew. Then sew together part of the sheet to create two sleeves and let the rest of the sheet hang loose. Complete the dress by adding a silver belt. A belt made from large silver circles works best but any silver belt will do. Shoes do not matter, but if your feet are visible, consider a pair of white sneakers.

The Princess Leia hairstyle is often considered the classic hairstyle. If you don't have long hair, buy a headband with fake hair from a Halloween costume store. The headband has the buns attached to either side and slips over your head. If your hair is long enough, divide it into two sections. Twist each section around the side of your head in a circle, covering your ear, until you reach the end of your hair. Secure with several hair clips.

Princess Leia doesn't have distinctive make-up. Rather, she appears to be wearing a simple coating of foundation, with black eyeliner, a small touch of pink or red blush, and light coloured lipstick. You can skip the make-up without losing the overall effect.

Accessorise your costume with a black blaster gun, as it is called in the movie. It resembles a black handgun with a long black protrusion on the end. While a replica can be purchased from a costume store, any cheap fake gun will work if you don't want to spend a lot of money on your costume. If you have a toy gun, spray paint it black. A water gun is perfect not only for finishing your costume, but it will make you the life of the party when you spray a few unsuspecting people.
