Birthday Gift Ideas for 11 Year Olds

Updated April 17, 2017

When shopping for a birthday gift for an 11-year-old, you have to be careful to pick something that is age appropriate. At 11 years old, children can be considered to be at an in-between age of development. An 11-year-old child is too old to be considered a baby, but too young to be called an adult.

A bicycle can give an 11-year-old a mode of transportation and a little independence. For the 11-year-old who already has a bicycle, you can upgrade them to a newer bicycle that has better features. An 11-year-old can use a bicycle to go to school, a friend's house, cinema or a mall. In addition to a bicycle, purchase a helmet for the 11-year-old to wear while riding. The 11-year-old should also be taught to not ride their bicycle in traffic, and to lookout for vehicles on the road.

An 11-year-old's reading comprehension skills are still developing. A parent or grandparent can give the child a book on their 11th birthday to nourish this development and also make the 11-year-old a better reader. You can purchase a selection of books for the 11-year-old, such as fiction, non-fiction and picture books. If the child is a diehard book fan, enrol them in a book club that will deliver them a new book each month.

Video Games and Video Gaming Systems

A video gaming system can offer endless hours of entertainment to an 11-year-old. If the child already owns a gaming system, such as a Nintendo Wii, Nintendo GameBoy or Sony PlayStation, then parents or grandparents can purchase them games to play on it. Purchase a variety of games for the 11-year-old, including those that have action, are educational and help develop motor skills. Pay close attention to game ratings, as some games are not suitable for young children.

Sports Equipment

For the 11-year-old who is into sports, giving them sports equipment on their birthday will help them better enjoy the game and improve their skills. Parents, grandparents or coaches can give an 11-year-old a football, basketball, soccer ball or golf ball. If the 11-year-old is involved in team sports, then you can also purchase them football helmets, shoulder pads, knee pads, mouth pieces and other safety equipment.
