Updated April 17, 2017

With busy schedules between school, work and family obligations, it's not always easy to sit down and enjoy a nutritious breakfast before heading to work in the morning. But some breakfast options are quick, simple and portable.

Whether instant or traditional, oatmeal is a healthful, easy breakfast you can eat at your desk. Top oatmeal with fresh fruit, nuts, cinnamon or eat it plain. Packed with nutrients, fibre and protein, oatmeal promotes weight loss, a healthy heart and low cholesterol.

Whole Grain Cereals

Cereal and milk are a classic breakfast idea that you can easily pack for work. Whole grain cereals will keep you fuller longer, which can reduce the amount of snacks you consume between breakfast and lunch. Top cereal with fresh fruit for extra nutrients.

Fruit Salad

Stock up on fruits from your local farmer's market or the supermarket and create a fruit salad you can enjoy in the morning as breakfast before work. Include a variety of fruits to get the vitamins and nutrients each provides. Melons, strawberries, pineapples, watermelon, grapes and blueberries are commonly found in fruit salads, but you can customise yours to your taste.

Frozen waffles take minimal time to prepare in the morning before work or once you arrive at your workplace. They come in a variety of flavours, such as cinnamon, blueberry and strawberry, and can eve be purchased in whole-wheat and gluten-free varieties. Top them with syrup, fresh fruit, peanut butter, cream cheese, jam or jelly.

Energy Bars

Energy bars are packed with vitamins and nutrients necessary to get your morning started properly. They're easy to transport from your home to the office and serve as a healthful snack in the middle of the day, as well as for breakfast. With a variety of flavours available, you can have a different breakfast each morning.

Breakfast Pita

Stuff pita bread with your favourite breakfast meat, eggs, cheese and vegetables to create a breakfast treat you eat at work. Or create a pita using only fruits or a fruit spread. For a healthful alternative, try whole-wheat pita bread.

Fruit Smoothie

Use a blender to create a fruit smoothie at the beginning of the week using your favourite fruits, ice, honey and a protein powder. This is a quick breakfast treat you can pour into a Thermos and carry to work with you. Make a large serving and refrigerate or freeze the remainder so you have enough for the entire week.
