At 90 years of age, most women have downsized or are in the process of downsizing their personal belongings. This makes it a special challenge to buy a gift for a woman of that age. Avoid trinkets that collect dust, and instead think of enjoyable or functional items the recipient will actually use. Before choosing, though, the woman's state of health and living conditions must be considered.

For the senior woman who enjoys reading, audio books are a welcomed gift. Before choosing an audio book, find out if the recipient has a cassette or CD player.

If the gift is for a special occasion and you don't mind purchasing an expensive item, consider an eBook reader, such as Amazon's Kindle or Barnes and Noble's Nook. For a woman who is bedbound and loves to read, the luxury of instantly downloading a new book is a special treat. This may not be an appropriate gift for the 90-year-old woman who is reluctant to use technology, however.

For many 90-year-old women, the telephone is still the primary means of communicating with family members and friends. If your gift recipient has a landline, consider giving her a cordless phone with large, easy-to-read numbers. A cell phone is also convenient for a senior woman, especially if she is using public transportation where she needs to call ahead for her ride. If she is reluctant to sign up for a cell phone service, buy her a prepaid cell phone as a gift.

Digital Frames

Digital frames are popular gadgets, storing and displaying dozens of photographs. Before giving the digital frame as a gift to a 90-year-old woman, take the time to gather and load the images on the frame. This may involve scanning photographs to create the digital images. The photographs can be a collection of favourite pictures, or choose a specific theme, such as her childhood, her grandchildren, her family or special vacations. When she opens the gift and plugs it in, all she needs to do is turn it on to enjoy the photographs.

Stationery Box

A stationery box, containing personalised stationery, pens, postage stamps, envelopes and a collection of greeting cards, makes for a functional gift. If presented in a decorator tin or box, these items are more festive. Ask for "Forever" stamps when purchasing postage stamps, so she can use the stamps without worrying about postal increases. Rather than purchasing a package of assorted greeting cards with lacklustre artwork, take extra time to look for appealing birthday, anniversary, get well and thank you cards that your gift recipient will enjoy sending to friends.
