Mohawk styles have become popular for both boys and girls. From traditional Mohawks to faux-hawks, the style is attainable by either sex. The style is especially popular for young boys, whether they're going for a punk look or simply want to change up their style for a day or two. The Mohawk is sometimes referred to as the "Iro," a nod to the Iroquois Indians who sported it.

Traditional Mohawk

While this hairstyle has been associated solely with the punk rock population in the past, the Mohawk has made its way into mainstream style. Traditionally the Mohawk haircut has both sides of the head shaven with a strip of hair down the centre of the head.

Variations

Play around with the traditional Mohawk to achieve the look you desire. The length of the strip of hair down the centre of the head can be altered. It can be extremely long, sticking straight up in the air, or it can be short, buzzed almost completely, just slightly longer than the shaved part of the scalp. It can also go as far down in the back as you wish, reaching all the way to the lower nape of your neck.

Faux-hawk

Faux-hawks are a great way to get the look of a Mohawk without committing to the style, shaving your head or growing part of your hair out. They're also a great option for young boys, who may want to play around with different styles and looks. Faux-hawks work best on short hair, since the sides have to be waxed to come to a point in the centre of the head. Also, doing this with a shorter mane means it will be easier to get the hair to stand straight up. You can even do this style with very short hair.

Maintenance

A big part of wearing a good-looking Mohawk is maintaining the style. You may have to shave or trim both the sides of your hair and the Mohawk regularly. A well-groomed Mohawk will always have a definitive line between the short and long parts. If your hair is going to be worn straight up, you'll have to brush, backcomb, blow dry and twist the strands. You will also have to apply hair products such as gel, wax and hairspray. When choosing a Mohawk style make sure to think about how much time and energy you're willing to dedicate to styling and trims.
