Tips to Lighten Hair at Home

Updated March 18, 2017

Blonde hair can have an attractive, girlish and playful look, but unfortunately, salon upkeep can be extremely time-consuming and expensive. If you want to have light hair without having to spend an arm and a leg to get and maintain it, consider some easy ways to lighten up your hair from the comfort of your own home.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is one of the easiest and most convenient natural techniques for hair lightening. Simply purchase a single fresh lemon from the produce section of your grocery store. Squeeze out roughly two tablespoons of juice, and blend it with water (about six tablespoons). Then, gently and liberally dab it onto your hair (make sure it's completely dry) with your hands. Blend it in thoroughly, and allow it to remain for about two hours. Repeat this process once a day for a few days until you notice your hair has some blonde highlights in it.

Sunshine is another effective and all-natural option for lightening the hair. Go into your backyard on a bright and sunny day. Lie down on a chaise longue or blanket, and allow the sun to do its work naturally. To protect your skin, make sure to apply sunblock all over your body. Pull your hair apart slightly to attain maximum sun exposure and lightening potential.

Honey also can be used to lighten the hair. To produce a hair lightening solution, just mix together two cups of water with a little bit of honey (two tablespoons is optimal). Allow the mixture to stay in your hair for about half an hour, and then rinse it out.

If you have a swimming pool in your backyard, it can provide some convenient hair lightening effects. Go for a swim in chlorinated water, which is capable of making the hair subtly lighter. After you swim, dry your hair under the sunshine to reap the maximum lightening benefits.

Chamomile Tea

In addition to serving as a comforting pre-bedtime beverage, chamomile tea can lighten hair naturally and effectively. Mix together two cups each of water and chamomile tea, and add a single tablespoon of lemon juice and parsley. Boil everything together and allow it to simmer for approximately 20 minutes. Remove the parsley and tea bags and wait until the concoction is at room temperature. Lean over a sink and pour the blend all over your scalp and hair. Keep it on for half an hour and then thoroughly rinse everything out at least twice.

Drugstore Hair Lighteners

Several companies manufacture ready-made hair lighteners that can be purchased at drugstores for home use. Look for a gentle, alcohol-free lightener that comes in spray form. To use, wet your hair slightly and then spray the lightener all over your locks. Apply it your hair evenly so no part of your head has more than any other. Then, simply go outside for a while and soak up the sun's rays. To get some additional help (and make the lightener work faster), use a hair dryer.
