The bar exam is the type of test that inspires nightmares. Law school graduates generally spend months preparing to take this six-hour test, which they must pass in order to practice law in their state. Although the exam is multiple choice, it's not easy. For instance, according to the National Conference of Bar Examiners, in 2010 only half of first-time test takers in California passed.

Guilty Pleasures

Most people who are preparing for the bar exam don't leave the house for months and read nothing but law books all day. Once he passes the exam, he's going to move into a stressful new job. He'll appreciate gifts that allow him to relax and not think too much. Pick up some recent comedy movies on DVD, since he was probably too busy studying to go to the movies. Comic books, romance novels or paperback crime novels will also be quick reading for him.

Lawyer Gear

As she's preparing to start a job as a lawyer, she'll need to upgrade the ratty backpack and plastic pens that she used in law school. If your budget allows, buy a leather briefcase embossed with her initials. Check with her family or a close friend before buying it to make sure she didn't already receive a briefcase at her law school graduation. If you're looking for a more affordable gift, buy a set of ballpoint pens or a leather-bound organiser.

Survival Kit

Moving into a professional job can be a major shock to new lawyers who have spent their whole lives in school. A survival kit can be personalised for anyone, and it will help make the transition into working life easier. Pack a basket with coffee, aspirin, candy, a miniature copy of the Constitution and some small signs with inspirational statements that she can put on her desk. For a humorous touch, include a stopwatch so she can get accustomed to keeping track of billable hours.

He spent years in law school, months studying for the bar and months worrying about the exam results. Now that he's passed, help him celebrate with a gift token for an enjoyable experience. If you know his tastes in sports or music, buy him a pair of tickets to a local game or concert. You might also buy a gift token for a round of golf or a day at the spa. He'll have a chance to unwind and relax before starting a new job.
