Teach third grade students about the wonders of the solar system by featuring crafts to hang up in the classroom or to go on notice boards. Third grade kids can usually write well, so make sure your students label and understand the order of the planets. Solar system activities can help students grasp the concept of gravity and how the solar system works in unity. Tailor these crafts around your lesson plans.

Clay Planets

Show your third graders how to make clay planet models. Ask all kids to make at least one planet, but encourage them to make other planets if they have time. Give children mouldable clay and help them create rounded planets. Once the clay is dry, help the kids paint the planet blue and green, red or dark blue, depending on which planet they are featuring. Some kids might also want to create a giant sun since the sun is the source of energy for the solar system.

Help your third-grade students paint pictures of the entire solar system model or specific planets in the solar system. Show them a model with the circular structure that shows how the planets are aligned and encourage them to replicate this. They can also paint a picture of Earth or Mars only. Once the paint has dried, the kids can embellish their paintings with glitter, puff paint or small fake gem stones to resemble stars that are far away from the planets. Hang up the finished creations on the classroom notice board.

Encourage your third grade students to make different types of collages about the solar system. They can make a collage showcasing their favourite planet with stars around it or they can create an entire model of the solar system. Give them stickers of stars and planets to decorate the collage or encourage them to draw pictures or cut out photos from the Internet or magazines. The kids can also cut out different planets from construction paper and glue these on the collage.

Solar System Facts Assignments

Third grade students enjoy crafts, but they can also benefit from learning about solar system facts. Encourage the kids to look up facts online or in books about the solar system and ask them to list the facts they find on the page and share them with the class. Some of the facts might be the same, but this will help the kids remember various details such as the fact that the sun is about 93,000 million miles from Earth. You can also ask the kids to make a coloured pencil drawing of the solar system and write three facts on the back of their drawing.
