How to Write Happy Birthday on a Cake

If you're hosting a birthday party for a loved one, treat her to a traditional cake topped with decadent frosting. A vibrantly decorated birthday cake will be the centrepiece of the party table, as well as a sweet treat for guests. Even if you don't bake the cake yourself, you can give it a personalised touch by writing a special message, such as "Happy Birthday," followed by the celebrant's name across the top of it.

Place the frosted cake on a flat surface directly in front of you so the message will come out even and not slanted.

Pick an icing featuring a shade that contrasts with the cake frosting so the message stands out. Equip a pastry bag with a #2, 3 or 4 rounded tip. Thin the icing with a bit of water or Karo syrup if it is too thick, which can cause the lettering to be too stiff.

Fill the pastry bag with a small amount of icing, because you are using a small tip. Refill the bag with small amounts of icing as you decorate, if necessary.

Squeeze the pastry bag and begin writing a "Happy Birthday" message across the top of the cake. Keep your hand steady and write one letter at a time, even when writing in cursive, to maintain control and create an even message.
