The Disney movie "The Princess and the Frog" introduced little girls to Princess Tiana, the first African-American Disney princess, and introduced parents to the idea of Princess Tiana theme parties. The movie mixes classic Disney magic with the sights and sounds of New Orleans, so the best Princes Tiana theme parties invoke the feeling of a fairy tale set on the bayou.

Most party supply stores have Princess Tiana--themed decorations, from honeycomb table centrepieces to Mylar balloons; however, you can also add your own touches. Decorate with light green, purple and blue crepe paper and balloons to match the Princess Tiana colour schemes. Create lily pads out of green construction paper to use as place mats. Look for frog-themed toys and decorations at your local dollar store to add to the gift and food tables. String white party lights and cover them in tulle to create a royal princess look.

The best Princess Tiana parties feature a royal feast for the little princesses to munch on. Buy Princess Tiana cake toppers to jazz up the birthday cake, or make cupcakes instead and draw on a green frog using icing. Princess Tiana is known for her creole cooking, so serve classic New Orleans dishes like jambalaya or gumbo. For a sweet treat, serve beignets. If you don't think the kids will go for creole cooking, serve princess food instead like finger sandwiches and cookies in the shape of crowns and frogs.

To curb boredom, plan some fun Princess Tiana activities. Play a version of the classic kids' game Duck, Duck Goose, but say "princess" instead of "duck" and "frog" instead of "goose." Set up a piñata in the shape of a frog and fill it with treats like candy necklaces and plastic jewellery. Send the girls on a backyard treasure hunt to find Princess Tiana toys and treats. Create a bayou relay race where the girls take turns hopping like frogs, crawling like alligators or flapping their arms like firefly wings.

Prizes and Gift Bags

At the end of the party, each little princess should take home her own gift bag of royal goodies. Plastic tiaras and wands can be purchased for cheap and passed out as the girls arrive so they can wear them for the party. Stuffed frog toys or frog school supplies like pencil toppers are best for young girls who might find rubber frogs to be too icky. Look for Princess Tiana party supplies like stickers, jewellery and small toys. Include a few sweet treats like crown-shaped sugar cookies, gummy frogs and candy jewellery.
