Mother's Day is an important time of year during which children in Sunday school can show appreciation for their moms. Great Mother's Day gifts do not have to be lavishly expensive; the most meaningful gifts are those that can be treasured for years to come and are made with materials found around the home. Give children the opportunity to give thanks to God for their moms through these crafts that will not cost a thing.

Mother's Day Plaque
This craft is a way for kids to show their appreciation for their moms on Mother's Day. Get them to draw a large oval outline onto a piece of coloured card stock and cut it out. Have children write "Thank You God for Mom" in big letters around the centre of the paper. They then colour in and decorate their paper plaques however they want. As they are decorating, remind them of the 10th commandment in the Bible to "honour your father and your mother" to teach them how important it is to respect and show love to their mothers.
Take photos of each child ahead of time and cut out their faces into a circular shape. This will make the centre of a flower. During Sunday school, get the children to draw and cut petal shapes out of coloured construction paper to fit round the circular photo. About 10 petals per child should be enough. Make sure the petals are small enough to fit easily round the photo, but large enough for children to write on. When the petals have been drawn and cut out, have the children write a personalised note to their mothers in each one, saying why they love her and why they are thankful to God for having her. If they cannot think of 10 things, they can just leave the petals blank. Glue the petals onto the back of the photo so that the messages can be seen from the front along with their photo. Finish by getting children to secure self-adhesive magnets to the back of each picture.
Message in a Bottle
A message in a bottle for Mother's Day is a free, simple craft which moms can treasure for years. Kids write a personalised message or poem about their moms on a piece of paper. The messages can include reasons why they love their moms and why they want to honour her. Have them roll up their messages and put them into empty glass bottles with corks. They can decorate the bottle with ribbons or stickers if they wish.
Give each child an empty clay terracotta flowerpot to decorate. Get them to paint their flowerpots using acrylic paint and then leave them alone to dry completely. Some suggestions for decorations include flowers, hearts or butterflies. When the paint dries the children can fill their pots with potting soil and plant seeds in them. Tell them that as the plant grows, so does God's love and so does their love for their mothers.
