Originally designed in the 19th Century as purely practical footwear for outdoor pursuits, Hunter wellington boots have become a top fashion brand in the UK and across the world. The rugged rubber boots are now just as likely to be worn by city commuters on a rainy day as they are by farmers or gamekeepers tramping through muddy fields. Hunter boots come in a range of different sizes and styles. To ensure they fit comfortably, try on a pair at a local shoe shop before you buy. If you want to purchase your Hunter boots online, there's more of a risk that you'll choose the wrong size.

Check your shoe size

Hunter advises online buyers to select boots in their regular shoe size. The manufacturer allows for the extra room needed for the thick socks or welly boot fleeces that many people wear with their boots. Put on a pair of shoes that you know fit comfortably and then write down the size of the shoe, which you'll typically find printed inside the shoe or underneath on the rubber or leather sole.

Measure your calf muscles

Hunter produces a range of boots in different styles, heights and sizes including Standard Fit, Regent, Argyll and Kids Hunter Originals. One of the key measurements to be aware of over and above your regular shoe size is the size of your calf muscles. Before buying Hunter boots, measure the thickest part of the calf muscle on your lower leg with a tape measure and write down your calf measurement in centimetres.

Online size and style guide

After finding your correct shoe size and calf measurement, consult an online Hunter boot sizing and style guide (see the link in the Resources section under this article). Find your shoe size in the "UK Size" column beside your preferred Hunter boot style. Check that the measurement in the "Calf Area" column that corresponds to your shoe size is larger than your calf size. If it's smaller, you might need to buy the next size up and wear the boots with welly socks for a comfortable fit.

Returns and refunds

If the boots don't fit comfortably when they arrive, you can usually return them for a full refund or exchange. Hunter offers a 30-day returns policy if you buy from the company direct. If you purchased them from another supplier, check the refund and returns policy before you buy. Take care if you buy from an online auction site as some sellers may not offer a returns policy, particularly if the boots were sold at a heavy discount.
