How to Disable Yahoo Messenger Sound on a Mobile Phone
Use the volume controls on your cell phone to silence Yahoo Messenger alerts. (Zedcor Wholly Owned/ Images)

You can disable the sound for new messages in Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone from the "Settings" app. Other mobile phone users may have to use a different method by physically turning down the phone's volume with the physical controls or via the Settings menu. Either way, you can silence the alert sounds no matter which phone you have.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

    Yahoo Messenger on iPhone

  1. 1

Turn on your iPhone and go to the Home screen.

  2. 2

Tap the "Settings" app and go to the "Notifications" section.

  3. 3

Scroll down to "Y! Messenger" and select it from the "Notifications" list.

  4. 4

Move the slider from the "ON" position to read "OFF" for the "Sounds" notification. If you do not wish to receive alerts or badges, move the slider to "OFF" for those options. Yahoo Messenger won't sound when you receive a new message.

    Other Cell Phones

  1. 1

    Power on your mobile phone.

  2. 2

Press and hold the volume control down button on your phone until it indicates that sounds are muted or silenced. Alternatively, you can silence alerts via the Settings menu.

  3. 3

Go to the Settings menu on your phone. Select the volume control and decrease the sound if the phone indicates noises are turned off.

  4. 4

Return to the main menu or Home screen on your phone. Select the "Yahoo Messenger" app and resume your conversations.
