How to Set Up Playlists With a MP3 Player & VLC

If you use VLC Media Player to play music on your computer, you may not use the same program to synchronise the music on your computer with your media player. For example, VLC cannot add songs to an iPod -- only iTunes can do that. If you have a favourite playlist in VLC, or simply prefer the program over the one that you use to manage music on your MP3 player, save the VLC playlist as a file on your desktop and import it directly into your MP3 player management software.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Open VLC Media Player using the desktop or Start menu shortcut. If VLC does not display a blank playlist on the right side of the window, click the "View" menu at the top of the screen, then click "Playlist."

  2. 2

Drag a music file from your computer to the playlist to add it. After dropping the file, VLC displays the song title on the playlist.

  3. 3

Drag and drop songs within the playlist to change their playing order.

  4. 4

Click the "Media" menu at the top of the VLC window, and click "Save Playlist to File" when you are finished creating the playlist.

  5. 5

Click the "Save as type" drop-down menu at the bottom of the "Save playlist as..." window, and select "M3U Playlist." Type a name for the playlist, use the file browser window to navigate to the desktop, and click the "Save" button.

  6. 6

Import the playlist into the management software that you use to add songs to your MP3 player. For example, if you use an iPod, drag the M3U file that you created from the desktop to iTunes to add it.
