Inkscape is a vector graphics program that has many of the professional features you might expect to find in a commercial product like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw. It has many uses, from creating content for ads to making graphics for web pages. It can also be used for illustrations for comics. For example, if you would like to create the face of an anime character, this is easily done in Inkscape.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Open Inkscape. Select "Layer" from the menu and choose "Add Layer." In the dialogue box, name the layer "Head" and click "Add."

  2. 2

Select the "Draw Bezier" tool from the toolbar on the left. In the options at the bottom, change the "Fill" colour to the shade you want for the skin.

  3. 3

Use the "Draw Bezier" tool to draw the shape of the head on the canvas by adding points. As you click to add these points, drag with the mouse to adjust the curve of the lines between the points.

  4. 4

Create another layer and name it "Hair." Change the "Fill" shade to the colour you want for the hair. Use the "Draw Bezier" tool to draw the hair. Keep in mind that anime hair is usually big, pointy and waving to one side.

  5. 5

Create another layer and name it "Eyes." Change the "Fill" colour to white and draw in the eyes for the character. Anime eyes should be large and round.

  6. 6

Continue this process of adding features on layers. Save your work.
