Making your own bottle cooler can help keep your drinks cool in the hot summer months. You can make a drink cooler out of common household items. Your homemade drink cooler will be able to hold several glass bottles and aluminium cans. Take your cooler with you to the beach, to a picnic or any other event in the summer.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  1. 1

Inspect the plastic liners to make sure there are no cuts, tears or rips in the liner. They must be tear free or the cooler will leak.

  2. 2

Place one of the plastic liners inside the other. Line the ends up perfectly without any wrinkles or folds. Put one more liner inside the two and staple the ends shut. Make two of these triple wrapped liners.

  3. 3

Remove the top of the cardboard box and place one of the triple wrapped liners inside. Press it tightly to the inside of the box and user a stapler to hold it in place. Make sure you cover the horizontal top and the vertical sides with the liner to avoid getting your box wet and soggy. Use multiple liners if necessary. Repeat this process for the bottom half of the cardboard box.

  4. 4

Crush ice every time you want to use the cooler. You will need enough ice to fill about one-third of the box. Use a hammer or other crushing tool to crush your ice or buy crushed ice from a store. You can also set a refrigerator ice machine to "crush" if you have one.

  5. 5

Place cans and bottles inside the cooler. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of salt over the top of the ice. The salt will help cause the cooler to cool more. Pour more ice over the top of the drinks until they are covered. Seal the box and carry it with both hands.
