A text message can easily be sent from any personal computer for free, even when sending text messages to text messaging services that only use a five-digit number. Advances in mobile technologies as well as in the way we communicate with each other through our computers has made text messaging as simple as instant messaging. As the line between what is a cell phone and what is a computer blurs, new programs and applications have come out to make it easy to send messages to the numbers that were once only for mobile devices.

Navigate your Internet browser to http://voice.google.com.>
If you do not already have a Google or Google Voice account, select "Create an Account" and follow the prompts to create one.
Log in to Google Voice either with your existing account or the one that you just created.
Select "Text" in the top left corner of the Google Voice screen.
Enter the five-digit code you wish to text in the "To" text box and type the message you wish to send in the "Message" text box.
Click the "Send" button.

Tips and warnings
- If you don't currently own a Google Voice number, you will need to pick a phone number based on the area code you're in if you want a number local to your area. You do not, however, have to choose a local number.
