How to Lower an MX-5 Soft Top

Updated March 23, 2017

The Mazda MX-5 -- commonly referred to as the Miata or the MX-5 Miata -- is a two-seat convertible that Mazda introduced in 1990. The MX-5 is known for its easy to use top. Unlike some of its competitors, such as the Pontiac Solstice, you don't need to step out of the car to lower the top. You can lower the Miata's soft top in less than a minute without moving from the driver side seat.

Stop your MX-5 Miata and put the transmission in park. If the car has a manual transmission, put it in neutral and set the emergency brake.

Inspect the part of the headliner above the rear-view mirror. This is the soft top latch. Push the release button and lower the latch to unlock the soft top.

Check the top storage area behind the seat headrests to make sure there are no items that would prevent the top from stowing properly.

Grasp the handle above the visor on the driver's side with one hand. Grasp the handle above the visor on the passenger side with the other hand.

Pull the top rearward and push it down into its storage compartment. It should be partially stowed. Push the top down firmly to snap it into the storage compartment.

To raise the top, pull the storage compartment release above the centre console panel. The stored top will unlock and partially raise from its storage. Grasp the edge of the top and pull it forward to raise it. Push the latch upward to lock the top.
