Skinny jeans are stylish denims that can be paired with flats, heels or tucked into boots. Like most denim, skinny jeans shrink after many washes. Skinny jeans are made of cotton twill with at least 2 per cent spandex for stretch allowance. Lengthening skinny jeans up to a few inches is possible without damaging the quality or losing the shape of the denim.

  • Washing machine or bucket
  • Skinny jeans
  • Cold water
  • Rubber gloves (optional)
  • 4 clothespins
  • Clothes hanger
  • Water bucket
  • 4 mini clamps
  • 2, 6.8kg. ankle or wrist weights
  • Dryer

    Turn skinny jeans inside-out, and put in the washing machine. Fill the washing machine a quarter full of cold water or until jeans are submerged. Allow jeans to soak for two hours maximum.

    Lightly wring out excess water from jeans, but keep them damp and heavy. When the jeans are hung, the water will weigh down the legs of the jeans, contributing to the stretching process. Wear rubber gloves when handling wet jeans.

    Affix four clothespins from the waistband to a clothes hanger, then hang the jeans over a bathtub or bucket to catch dripping water.

    Hold one jean leg at the hem with front and back together. Place the flat edge of a weight on the jean leg, covering at least 2 inches up from the edge of the hem. Attach a mini clamp on either side of the leg seams, so the clamp is parallel to the inseam and another clamp is parallel to the outseam but also so each clamp holds the hem and weight securely together. Repeat on the other jean leg.

    Allow jeans to hang for 12 hours or until desired length has been reached. Remove clamps and weights, take the jeans off the clothes hanger and place it on a clean flat surface for them to completely dry.

    With the skinny jeans still turned inside out, place them in the dryer and set it to "air dry" for under 10 minutes to allow the jeans to soften.

Tips and warnings

  • To ensure that the jeans stretch evenly, smooth out the legs and level the hems before attaching the weights.
  • Oversoaking the jeans in water can fade the colour of the denim, making it look washed out.
