Garry's Mod, known as "GMod" for short, is an open-ended modification to the critically acclaimed Half-Life 2 computer game by Valve Software. The third-party modification relies heavily on the creative forces of its users, as the game features an endless amount of constructible pieces that can be combined to create an infinite amount of game scenarios. The experimental nature of the game modification is what makes Garry's Mod a unique and interesting gaming experience. Setting up a GMod server is done through the Steam Client utilities, which is a platform released by Valve software that allows users to connect to game servers.

Download and Install the HLDS Update Tool from the Steam official website (see Resources). Save the installation file to the desktop and double-click the file to begin the installation. Follow the onscreen instructions and install the file to the "C:\Program Files\srcds\" directory.

  2. 2

Press "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" to bring up the Windows Task Manager window. Click "File," then "New Task (Run)..." from the top pull-down menu.

  3. 3

Type in "Cmd" and press "Enter" to start up a Windows Command Prompt window.

  4. 4

Navigate to your "srcds" folder by double-clicking "My Computer" and finding the "C:\Program Files\srcds\" folder. Right-click on an empty space in the Windows Explorer file browser and select "New," then "Folder" from the right-click menu. Name the new folder "Game."

  5. 5

Type in "cd C:\" in the command prompt and press "Enter." Type in "cd Program Files" and then "cd srcds", hitting enter after each line. These commands will navigate you to the srcds folder through the Windows Command Prompt.

  6. 6

Type in "HldsUpdateTool.exe -command update -game garrysmod -dir games" into the command prompt and press "Enter." This command will begin downloading and updating files that are necessary to run a Garry's Mod server. The process will take approximately 30 minutes to one hour, depending on the speed of your Internet connection. Close the Windows command prompt when the download and update process is complete.

  7. 7

Double-click on the file called "srcds.exe" to bring up a server configuration window. Select "Garry's Mod" from the "Game" drop-down menu. Choose a name for the server and type it into the "Server Name" text box.

  8. 8

Select the maximum server capacity using the "Max Players" drop-down menu and check the box titled "Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat)" if you want to place anti-cheating protection on the server.

  9. 9

Click the "Start Server" button. A new window will pop up titled with the server name you inputted into the server configuration window. Your Gmod server is now up and running.
