How to Block Texts on an iPhone
With the iBlacklist application, you can block any unwante text messages indefinitely. (female reacts to a message image by PaulPaladin from Fotolia.com)

The iPhone is exclusively available to AT&T customers, as of December 2010. As an AT&T subscriber, you can send and receive text messages with your iPhone, whether you have a text messaging plan or not. If you have a monthly text messaging allowance, AT&T charges you a fee for each text you send and receive after you exceed your limit. If you're getting unwanted text messages that are costing you money, you can pay AT&T an extra fee to block certain numbers. However, if you don't want to pay a monthly fee, you can use the iBlacklist application for iPhone.

Instructions

  1. 1

Ensure that your iPhone has the "3G" or Wi-Fi symbol displayed on the upper-left region of the screen. You need to have a data connection to be able to access iBlacklist.

  2. 2

Press the "Start" button on your iPhone and drag the arrow to the right to access the main screen. Look for the "Cydia" application on your iPhone's screen and tap on its icon to open it. Tap the "Sections" option once Cydia loads on your screen. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap on the "Utilities" option to select it. Scroll to the "i" letter and tap on the "iBlacklist" to select and install it. Select "Install" to install iBlacklist on your iPhone. As of December 2010, the iBlacklist application is £7.

  3. 3

Tap the new "iBlacklist" icon displayed on your iPhone's screen to launch the application.

  4. 4

Tap the "Enable" option displayed on the upper region of the screen. In the "Enable" menu, switch the SMS option to "ON" by dragging the button to the right side. Tap the "Save" button on the upper-left side of the screen to save the changes. You will then be sent to the iBlacklist main menu screen.

  5. 5

Tap on the "Blacklists" option displayed on the iBlacklist main menu. Tap on the "Add new Blacklist" option.

  6. 6

Add the number of the person you want to block by tapping on the "Add from Contacts," "Add from Recent Calls," or "Add from Recent SMS" options. Each option will send you to a different list of numbers. For instance, if you want to block the number from a recent text message (SMS), you would have to tap the "Add from Recent SMS" option.

  7. 7

Press the red button at the bottom of the screen, and the phone number you added to the blacklist will be blocked from sending your text messages.

Tips and warnings

  • If you don't mind paying an extra fee on your monthly bill, you can order the AT&T; Smart Controls service for £3.20 a month (as of December 2010). This service also enables you to block text messages on any cell phone, including the iPhone (See Resources).
