How to Tell if My Nikes Are Genuine
Nikes got their start as basketball shoes, and are still a major player in the market. (basketball image by Dron from

Nike shoes are an iconic brand that have become collectors' items. Many people buy more pairs than they could possibly wear, either as an investment or for the pleasure of collecting. With the explosive growth of online sales and auction websites, counterfeit Nike shoes have become more and more of a problem. These shoes are often made in factories from moulds or patterns stolen by workers in the original Nike factory but are rarely the same quality of workmanship. There are a few telltale signs of a fake; if they aren't there, your Nikes are likely to be genuine.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Gather up all the packaging that the shoes came in when you purchased them.

  2. 2

Check the SKU numbers on the inside of the shoes and on the box. These are unique product codes. If the two numbers do not match, the shoes are likely to be fake.

  3. 3

Feel the rubber of the soles. Real Nikes are made with BRS 1000 rubber that should feel soft, with plenty of grip. If the soles feel slippery or like plastic, they are likely to be counterfeit.

  4. 4

Examine the shoebox. Real Nike shoe boxes are made of thick, sturdy cardboard. If the box feels flimsy or falls apart easily, it is likely not an authentic Nike product. Real Nike shoes should also never arrive wrapped in plastic.

  5. 5

Bring the shoes to a large brand-name store selling the same model and compare them in size and quality. Counterfeit Nike shoes are often a little bit too small for their size number. If the materials and sizes match up, the shoes are likely to be genuine.
