Your goals-against average, the average number of goals scored against your team each game, is a good indicator of your defence, though it may not tell the whole story. As metric, it will give you a comprehensive idea of how your defence is doing, but won't help you pinpoint defensive weaknesses such as goalkeeping or problems with your back line. Goals against is often one of the determinants (or a facet of it) for standings in a league or a tournament, along with points and goals scored. If your team travels, you may want to separate home and away games to see if there is a significant difference.

Things you need
Determine the period of time you want the average for, whether it be a season, a tournament or other period of time.
Tally the number of games during the period.
Add up the number of goals scored against your team during the period you are averaging.
Divide the number of goals scored against you by the number of games to get your goals against average. For example, if you have 23 goals scored against you in 14 games, your goals against average is 1.64.
