How to get the smell of vomit out of a bed mattress

Updated February 21, 2017

Caring for your family is most likely one of your top priorities, and your family members can't be in optimal health all the time. The people in your household are going to get sick, and one of the symptoms of several illnesses and strains of the flu is vomiting. If one of your mattresses has ended up the target of vomit, you may think that you'll never be able to get the odour out. But, while it can take a little elbow grease and time, it is possible to get the smell of vomit out of a mattress.

Strip the bed of all linens, including sheets and blankets.

Place a dry towel over the area where the vomit was to soak up any remaining moisture. Stand on the towel so the pressure can get the soaked-in moisture.

Spray on an enzymatic cleaner to eliminate the vomit smell and get rid of the stain.

Blot the area with a clean, light-coloured towel to remove moisture. Continuing spraying on the cleaner and blotting it dry until the towel is no longer discoloured from the vomit.

Open all your windows and allow the mattress to sit in the sun . This will help eliminate any additional odour-causing bacteria.

Tip

Many enzymatic cleaners are sold as pet deodorisers in grocery or home stores.
