Whether you enjoy anime, a vibrant Japanese artistic technique, for its boldly drawn cartoons or exciting storylines, you can let your creativity flow by creating your own anime designs. The style, as exampled by the different characters in famous anime such as “Sailor Moon,” “Pokemon” and “Ghost in the Shell,” offers the option for just about anyone to try his hand, or paintbrush, at drawing anime. Take advantage of your computer’s Microsoft Paint software, included with all Windows installations, and create your own anime characters.

  1. 1

Open Paint, click the "Paint" button in the top left corner of the screen and select “Properties.” Change the page size to your preferred dimensions. For an anime character the size of a full page of copy paper, set your dimensions to 8.5 inches by 11 inches and click “OK.”

  2. 2

Check the “Color 1” button on the toolbar at the top of the page. If it is not black by default, click the black box under the “Colors” section, which will turn the button black. Anime characters are often illustrated with thick black outlines, so you’ll want to outline your character with black.

  3. 3

Click the “Brushes” button in the middle of the toolbar. Click the “Marker” option. Click the “Size” button in the middle of the toolbar and select the second line option.

  4. 4

Position your cursor on the white Paint workspace and draw the outline of your anime character, such as a girl or a small monster creature.

  5. 5

Click a bright coloured box in the “Colors” section, turning the “Color 1” button to the new colour. This will be the main colour of your character’s body, skin or fur. Click the “Fill with colour” tool, which looks like a tipping can of paint in the “Tools” section of the toolbar. Click inside the outline of the character, which will fill with colour.

  6. 6

Click the “Brushes” button and select the first option, “Brush.” Reduce the line thickness size to the first, and thinnest, option. Select another bright, bold colour such as blue.

  7. 7

Position your cursor near the top of your character’s head and draw hair, if it is a person. For a female, draw long, poofy pigtails; for a male, draw a spiky Mohawk. If your character is a creature, add small tufts of coloured fur around its body.

  8. 8

Click the “Brushes” tool again and select the “Natural pencil.” Switch back to the black paint colour and draw the character’s facial features. Anime characters have very large eyes, so be sure that the eyes take up quite a bit of room on the face. Switch paint colours and add a dot of colour into the eyes if desired.

  9. 9

Continue switching brushes and paint colours to add the character’s clothes and accessories, such as a wand, skateboard or fairy wings.

  10. 10

Click the "Paint" button, click “Save As,” type a name for the anime file and save it to the computer.
