To prevent your phone from accidentally calling someone while it is in your purse or pocket, place the phone in Standby Mode. To lock your keyboard, select "Keyboard Lock" from your phone's Home screen. Neither of these locking methods require a pin or password to unlock your phone. If you're concerned about privacy issues or would just like a more secure way to lock your phone, program your BlackBerry to add a pin lock, which requires a password to gain access to your phone.

Press the "BlackBerry" icon button on the front of your phone. This button opens the Home screen of your phone.
Click on "Options" from the Home screen. The icon for options is a wrench.
Scroll down the list of options. Click "Security Options."
Select "General Settings" from the Security Options list. Typically, General Settings is the first option on the list.
Change the Password option from Disabled to "Enabled." Press the "Back Arrow" button on your phone and select "Save." The Back Arrow button is located to the right of your trackball or trackpad.
Type into the Password Box the password that you want to make. When finished, click "Enter." Re-enter the password in the Verify New Password Box, then click "Enter" again.
Exit the entire Options menu by hitting the "Back Arrow" button until you've returned to the Home screen.
Click "Lock" options in the Home screen to lock your phone.
Press any key on your keyboard when you need to access your phone. Type in your password in the Password Box, then press your trackball or trackpad to unlock your phone.
