Riven is the sequel to the popular puzzle and adventure game Myst. It takes the storyline created in Myst and extends it as well as introduces new stories, worlds and puzzles. Riven was designed and created to run on a 16-bit system for Windows 95. The latest operating systems, which include Windows XP operate on 32 bits or even 64 bits. This causes problems on installation and when playing the game as other programs that are needed, mainly QuickTime, will not be compatible with Riven.

Things you need

  • Riven discs
  • Internet connection

  1. 1

Uninstall QuickTime if it is installed on your system. Riven was made to run on an older version of QuickTime, QuickTime 2. Newer versions of QuickTime will interfere with the installation.

  2. 2

Install Riven disc 1 into the CD or DVD drive. The CD version will be inserted in the CD drive and the DVD version in the DVD drive. The start up-window will automatically appear.

  3. 3

Click on install and follow the on-screen prompts. Riven will install QuickTime 2 and any other needed add-on programs.

  4. 4

Install Riven manually if the start-up window does not automatically open. Go to the task bar and click start. Click on run and type the following command: "D:\SETUP.EXE." If the DVD or CD drive is designated a different letter substitute this for D. Click "OK" and follow the onscreen prompts.

  5. 5

Start the game to ensure installation was successful.

  1. 1

Run the program in compatibility mode if you had issues with standard installation. Right-click on the Riven icon and select properties. Click on compatibility and set the program to be compatible with Windows 95. Start the program to determine if the problem is fixed.

  2. 2

Copy the three files from QuickTime 2 that Riven needs to run properly: QTIM32.DLL, DHIO32.QTC and CMGR32.DLL. Find these three files in the QuickTime folder and copy them to the Riven folder, normally found in the "WINDOWS\SYSTEM32" or "WINDOWS\SYSTEM" file. The QuickTime 2 file is in "Program files." You can upgrade to the latest QuickTime version once these files are copied. Run the program to see if this fixes any installation issues.

  3. 3

Download the Riven official v1.02 patch if the message "QuickTime is out of date or cannot be found" occurs, even after following Steps 1 and 2. Riven cannot find the QuickTime 2 files that were copied to its systems folder. The Riven patch will take care of this problem and provide a guide to the needed files. You can find the patch at the UbiSoft website (see Resources).

Tips and warnings

  • Many times Riven will install on Windows XP without any problems. A successful or unsuccessful installation will depend on your system. Follow the troubleshooting installation steps until the installation problems are fixed.
