The HP Officejet G85 is a business printer with features such as an automatic document feeder, a colour copier and an internal memory that can save up to 125 pages of fax documents. Given the versatility of the Officejet G85, it will only be a matter of time after installing it that you begin to see the print quality degrade because of a lack of ink. The Officejet G85 uses two ink cartridges: one for black printing and another for colour. Replace these ink cartridges if you find that printed pages have begun to appear faded and washed out.

- HP 45 black ink cartridge
- HP 78 standard capacity or 78XL high-capacity colour ink cartridge
Locate the curved lip on the edge of the centre door of the Officejet G85, above the centre of the paper tray. Lift this door until it snaps into the raised position. Allow a moment for the Officejet G85 ink cartridges to move to the centre of the printer. Each cartridge is secured with a plastic lid that flips up to open.
Flip both plastic lids open to expose the ink cartridges. The HP 45 black cartridge is on the right, and the HP 78 or 78XL cartridge is on the left.
Lift one or both cartridges straight up and out of their compartments to remove them from the Officejet G85.
Take a replacement Officejet G85 ink cartridge out of its foil pouch, and peel the plastic off of the bottom of the cartridge. Note that the plastic covers sensitive components that you should avoid touching.
Drop the ink cartridge into the corresponding compartment inside the Officejet G85, and snap the lid down over the cartridge. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with the second ink cartridge if needed.
Pull the curved lip in the centre of the Officejet G85 down to close the printer and prepare it for use. While the printer calibrates the new ink cartridge(s), make sure that the paper tray has at least one piece of white paper loaded.
Press the "Enter" button on the Officejet G85 control panel to print a test sheet after the printer finishes initialising the new cartridges. Follow the instructions on the test sheet to complete the cartridge alignment process.
