IMVU allows users to create characters representing themselves and chat with other IMVU users. Part of the success of IMVU comes from the ability to customise and design the clothing your characters wear. Design your own outfits for your character to use, or sell them online to other IMVU players. You can earn credits and possibly some cash if your creations are well-received by the community.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • IMVU account
  • IMVU preview tool
  • Photo editing software
  • Opacity map or mesh

  1. 1

Register with IMVU creator. Only those with full memberships who are registered as creators can design IMVU clothing.

  2. 2

Download the IMVU Previewer. Use it to view your clothing in 3D and submit your designs to the website. This tool is required for designing clothing on IMVU.

  3. 3

Open a photo editing program such as Adobe Photoshop or GIMP and download an opacity map or a mesh for the clothing style you want to create. Create your own opacity map if desired, but remember this takes much advanced experience with creating 3D meshes.

  4. 4

Add colour and texture to the clothing using the photo editing brushes and selection tools to create an original item. When starting from scratch, you'll need to create a basic background colour or texture for all items and add details, such as buttons or folds in fabric, on top of that. Create each colour and item in a different layer for individual editing if needed. When working with an existing item, make the changes you want and colour transparent areas--where skin should show through--black on the opacity map.

  5. 5

Open the IMVU Previewer and log in. Open your saved clothing file in the previewer and look for areas where the clothing doesn't fit right or the skin shows through when it shouldn't. Fix these mistakes in your photo editing software and view in the previewer again.

  6. 6

Upload clothing from the previewer to IMVU to sell or to use on your own avatar.
