Car manufacturers have responded to the emergence of iPods and other MP3 devices with technologies to accommodate these music players. BMW has developed a way for their vehicles to recognise iPod playlists and store them on a preset in their audio systems.

  1. 1

Open your iTunes program on your computer to access your music.

  2. 2

Click on “New Playlist” from the “File” menu. This option allows you to create a playlist that you can synchronise onto your iPod.

  3. 3

Name the playlist--this is required when you create the playlist. For the BMW iPod audio unit to recognise the playlist, you must use a specific name. You should name the playlist “BMW#XXX”--replacing the # with a number between 1 and 5, and replacing the X’s with any letters you like; e.g., BMW4POD.

  4. 4

Drag songs from your iTunes library into the new playlist. This simply means clicking on a title, holding it down and dragging it into the playlist title on the left side of the screen.

  5. 5

Connect your iPod to your computer and allow the iPod to synchronise with iTunes, which will transfer the new BMW playlist to your iPod.

  6. 6

Connect the iPod to your BMW audio system. It will scan the iPod for compatible playlists and allocate BMW playlists to a button on the audio system--for example, Preset 1, “BMW1POD”; Preset 2, “BMW2POD.”
