How to find someone who has been arrested

Updated March 21, 2017

Arrest and accident records are not private documents. You can find someone who has been arrested with a little research, as long as you know the person's full name and where he lives. More information may be needed if he was not arrested locally. Gather as much information as you can before getting started. Begin online first, where most documents are accessible.

Check with the police department where the person you want to check out lives. In most states you can request an arrest record over the Internet or call the department for an application form. Some states charge a small fee to provide a copy of an arrest or accident report.

Check county and state jails. You can perform a search online by using the full name of the person you are looking for (see Resources).

Visit the Federal Bureau of Prisons online to screen its database for the person you're looking for (see Resources).
