How to make a fake nose ring
Fake nose rings can be made from lip rings. (julia image by dani kreienbühl from

Nose rings are worn in nostril piercings and are available in either a hoop or stud design. If you are considering a nose piercing, you may try a fake one to become comfortable wearing one before actually piercing the nose. Lip rings are available in a full-hoop captive bead design that does not pierce the skin, and they are easily modified to create fake nose rings.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • 16 gauge full-hoop captive bead lip ring
  • Flat nose pliers
  • Hydrogen peroxide

  1. 1

Open the lip ring by pushing the bead out of the ring. If you cannot remove the bead with your hands, use the flat nose pliers inside of the ring to slightly force the jewellery open, loosening the bead enough for removal.

  2. 2

Bend one end of the ring slightly inward with the flat nose pliers to create a semi-spiral shape. This slight hook shape will help the jewellery to stay in place by latching onto the edge of your inner nostril.

  3. 3

Tighten the ring by placing it inside the flat nose pliers and slowly squeezing the sides in. The ring is not easily loosened after being tightened with the pliers, so it is important not to tighten the ring too much. The opening on the ring should be approximately 2mm wide, a little bit thicker than a nickel.

  4. 4

Soak the fake nose ring in a small container of hydrogen peroxide for two minutes to clean it before trying it on. Slip the fake nose ring over your nostril so that the hook of the ring fits over the edge of your inner nostril, with the outer ring sitting comfortably on top of the nostril indent.

Tips and warnings

  • Keep the fake nose ring in a sealed container. Soak it in hydrogen peroxide before each use.
