It's not just girls and women who highlight their hair, many men and young boys do, as well. Highlighting the hair is quite easy if you have the proper tools and take the time to do it right. Allow the boy to pick out the colour of the hair dye he would like to use to highlight his hair. Adding dark colour to light coloured hair is known as lowlighting. Adding lowlights to the hair is the exact same process as adding highlights.

Wash the boy's hair with a clarifying shampoo two days before the highlighting. This will remove build-up. Do not wash the boy's hair again until after highlighting.
Wrap the towel around the boy's shoulders and comb his hair in the fashion he normally wears it.
Open your highlighting kit and pull out the cap and the hook. Place the cap on the boy's head and secure the ties under his chin. You will notice that the cap is covered in holes.
Insert the tip of your hook into one of the holes of the cap. Turn the hook at a slight angle. This will cause the hook to grab hold of some hair. Pull the hook back through the whole. Repeat until you are satisfied with the amount of hair that is sticking out of the cap.
Put on the gloves that came with the kit and mix your highlighting agent according to package directions. All necessary components should come with the kit.
Apply the highlighting dye to the hair that is sticking out through the holes. Run the hair through your gloved fingers to make sure the dye saturates it well. Leave on according to package directions (usually 20 to 30 minutes).
Remove the cap and rinse the hair with warm water. Apply a conditioner and rinse once more. Style as desired.
Tips and warnings
- If you prefer not to use a cap, simply paint the dye onto the sections of hair you want to highlight.
