Buffalo grass is a low-maintenance alternative to traditional lawn grasses. It requires no irrigation or fertilisation and tolerates most types of soil except soils with high sand content. It grows to no more than 6 inches in height, which eliminates the need for frequent mowing. It is resistant to insects and disease and is accommodating to most types of wildflowers. You should plant buffalo grass only after all possibility of frost is past.

  1. 1

Use the shovel to prepare the soil to a depth of 2 inches.

  2. 2

Rake the soil until it is fine and level. As you rake, occasionally roll the soil over and under. This ensures a firm bed.

  3. 3

    Remove all visible weeds.

  4. 4

Water the bed thoroughly, and then wait two weeks before planting. Because tilling of the soil stimulates new weed growth, this two-week interval will give you the opportunity to remove the inevitable new weeds.

  5. 5

Sow the seeds at a rate of 1.81kg. of seed per 1,000 square feet, either by hand or with a garden planter. Be sure you spread evenly.

  6. 6

Cover the newly sowed seeds with 1/2 inch of soil or compost.

  7. 7

    Water thoroughly after planting.

Tips and warnings

  • Water seedlings regularly. They must receive at least an inch of water each week. Do not allow the soil to dry out.
  • Though not necessary, you can fertilise in the spring. Use a slow-release fertiliser with an NPK ratio of 3-1-2.
  • Buffalo grass will not grow well in shady areas.
  • Mowing is OK, but the grass must stay at least 3 inches high.
