How to Change a Headlight Bulb on a BMW

Updated February 21, 2017

Taking your BMW to the dealership for repairs is costly and time consuming. Although there are some repairs you should leave to the professionals, there are a few minor tasks you can do yourself. Changing headlight bulbs on your BMW does not require the use of any tools and can be done in the matter of a few minutes. Your owner's manual will list the specific bulb type needed for your BMW model.

Turn off the headlights and the engine. You'll be reaching into the engine compartment to change the bulb so let the engine cool off before you proceed.

Open the bonnet.

Reach behind the headlight for the bulb you need change. Remove the black cover cap over the bulb you need to replace. Rotate it to the left and pull it off.

Rotate the bulb holder and pull it out.

Pull the used bulb out of the holder.

Push the new bulb into the holder.

Reinsert the bulb holder into the assembly. Rotate it to the right to secure it.

Replace the black cover cap and rotate it to the right.

Do not handle the bulb with your bare hands. Wear gloves or use a clean cloth while holding the bulb. The oils from your fingers can damage the bulb and shorten its lifespan.
