How to Make a Beaded Jesus Fish Key Chain
The Jesus fish is a symbol of Christianity. (Fish in the sand image by Smiler from Fotolia.com)

The Jesus fish is a common symbol of Christianity that can be found in car windows, on necklaces and even key chains. According to All About God, the symbol of the Jesus fish is older than the other popular traditional Christian symbol, the cross. If you want to proudly display the Jesus fish, you can purchase one at your local Christian book store; however, some these can be expensive. Luckily, you can easily make your own Jesus fish key chain at home for little money.

Instructions

  1. 1

Bend a 12-inch light blue chenille pipe cleaner in half. Where the bend is will be the point of your fish’s nose.

  2. 2

Feed a piece of fishing line through the hole in a light blue plastic pony bead so that the line is out the other side of the bead and the bead is hanging from the line. Tie the ends of the fishing line into a secure knot. The bead should still be free moving, and the line should make a 1-inch loop. Make sure the knot is tight, since this will attach your fish to your key ring. To make it easier to tie the knot, use a 6-inch piece of fishing line, and cut away the excess once the knot is tied. When you have completed this step, you will have a loop of fishing line with a bead on it.

  3. 3

Feed a light blue plastic pony bead onto the pipe cleaner, and move it down until it is over the point for the nose. Twist the entire pipe cleaner around the bead to lock it in place. You will have two separate arms of the pipe cleaner sticking out from this twisted point.

  4. 4

Feed 30 more light blue pony beads onto the pipe cleaner, placing 15 beads on each arm of the pipe cleaner. Twist the pipe cleaner arms together where the beads end. Make sure the beads are snug before twisting. You will have two separate arms of the pipe cleaner sticking out from this twisted pointed. This will make the fish’s tail.

  5. 5

Feed 10 more light blue pony beads onto the pipe cleaner, placing 5 beads on each arm. Wrap the loose end of the pipe cleaner sticking out beyond the last bead on each arm around the pipe cleaner between the last pony bead and the second to last bead. This will secure the tail. Make sure you do this to both arms to complete the tail.

  6. 6

Cut a 12-inch length of blue string. Feed alphabet letter beads onto the string to spell out Jesus. Position the letters in the centre of the string.

  7. 7

Place your fish in front of you on your work surface. Position the string with the alphabet beads inside the body of the fish. Make sure it is centred.

  8. 8

Wrap the loose ends of the string around the pipe cleaner at the nose and tail, and tie it to secure it. Each end of the string should be tied between two pony beads.

  9. 9

Feed the fishing wire loop from Step 2 onto a metal key ring to complete your Jesus fish key chain. You can purchase key rings at your local craft store, or you can use one from an old key chain.

Tips and warnings

  • You may have to adjust the shape of the body of the fish to resemble a fish shape. To do this, bend the pipe cleaner into the proper rounded shape.
