How to Reset a Computer in a 2000 Chevy Silverado

Updated March 23, 2017

The 2000 Chevy Silverado uses an on-board diagnostic computer to generate and store trouble codes related to the truck's emissions system. These trouble codes can be decoded by a Chevy dealer, and once you know what's wrong, you can fix the problem. When the issue has been resolved, you need to know how to reset the computer in your 2000 Silverado. Otherwise, the trouble codes will remain stored on the computer.

Turn the ignition key to the "on" position, but do not crank the engine.

Open the fuse panel by pulling down on the fuse cover with your fingers.

Locate the fuse for the computer. Use the fuse diagram to locate the fuse marked "ECU."

Pull the ECU fuse using the fuse pullers in the fuse panel.

Wait three minutes and put the fuse back in. Then turn the ignition off. The computer will be reset.
