Hewlett-Packard (HP) keyboards, like other standard 101-key keyboards, include not only the regular QWERTY keyboard layout, but also a set of function keys programmed specifically for HP computers. When experiencing a problem with a key on your HP keyboard, you can remove the key, clean under the key or replace it to solve the problem. Removing the space bar is a bit of challenge due to a metal retainer holding the key in place. The metal retainer is hooked into the body of the space bar and into the keyboard itself.

  5. 5

Pry the other side of the space bar gently up until it is free of the post on the keyboard.

  6. 6

Place the tip of the flat head screwdriver next to the piece of plastic where the end of the metal retainer is connected to the keyboard.

  7. 7

Push the metal retainer gently away from the plastic connector to free it.

  8. 8

Lay the space bar, its metal retainer and rubber suction cups on a soft rag or cloth.

  9. 9

Remove the metal retainer from the space bar with the flat head screwdriver. The metal retainer is seated in two grooves.

Tips and warnings

  • When reinstalling the space bar, assemble the metal retainer first to the space bar, then attach the retainer to your HP keyboard before pushing the space bar in place.
