Wellington boots were made famous by the first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, to such an extent that they were named after him. The boots were worn originally by 19th century British aristocracy as a fashion statement but nowadays they are used mainly for practical purposes. Wellingtons are made for fitting either men or women and come in both adult and child sizes. When choosing a Wellington boot, you must consider more than just your shoe size.

  1. 1

Determine the intended use for the boot. Wellington manufacturers make styles of boots for different purposes. For example, will they be worn for leisure, farming, gardening or hunting?

  2. 2

Think about the special features of the boot that you require based on its intended use. Wellington boots come with built-in liners for cold conditions or extra traction for slippery slopes. Think about what type of sock you will wear, too. If you require thick socks, buy a larger size. If you are going wear your Wellingtons in hazardous working conditions, consider a steel toe.

  3. 3

Consider the height and width you want. Wellingtons come in various height requirements depending, again, on intended use. They range from chest high to below the knee. Wellington boots come in standard calf fittings or with adjustable straps.

  4. 4

Specify your sex. Although this is obvious if you are buying your boots in a shop, it is not when you're shopping online. The Wellington website has boots classified by sex because they are shaped slightly differently for men than they are for women.

  5. 5

Know your shoe size. Wellington boots are manufactured to fit your standard sex-specific shoe size.

  6. 6

Visit the Wellington boot website (see Resources) to see a rotating image of each style of boot, learn more about special features and determine costs and payment options.

Tips and warnings

  • Wellington boots may be used primarily for practical purposes now, but they come in a wide variety of colours and patterns for the fashion conscious.
