- RF voltmeter
- Round toothpick
- Utility knife
- 41-AWG enamelled copper wire
- Wire cutter
- 0.090-inch-diameter brass tube
- Soldering iron
- BNC male connector
- Bonding glue
- Cotton swab
Put some newspaper down on a work surface. Cut off a small piece of the round toothpick using the utility knife.
Strip the ends of both sides of the 41-AWG enamelled copper wire using the wire strippers.
Wind one end of the 41-AWG enamelled copper wire around the end of the toothpick, where the cut was made. Stop winding the wire after 19 turns have been done.
Run the other end of the 41-AWG enamelled copper wire through the 0.090-inch-diameter brass tube. Snip the wire with a wire cutter so that about a 5-inch segment exits the tube.
Attach one of the two leads from the 41-AWG enamelled copper wire to the positive contact on the BNC connector. Solder the connection. Attach the other lead from the 41-AWG enamelled copper wire to the negative contact on the BNC connector. Solder the connection.
Place the BNC connector against the 0.090-inch-diameter brass tube, with the wiring all inside. Epoxy the BNC connector to the 0.090-inch-diameter brass tube.
Apply bonding glue to a cotton swab. Rub the swab against one side of the copper wire wound around the toothpick.
Push the toothpick into the end of the 0.090-inch-diameter brass tube so that a little of the wiring can be seen exiting the tube. Push the wiring wound around the toothpick that has got bonding glue on it against the wall of the 0.090-inch-diameter brass tube. Let the glue set.
Screw the BNC male connector on the 0.090-inch-diameter brass tube onto the BNC female connector of the RF voltmeter. Turn on the RF voltmeter and move it around.
Watch the number on the display of the RF voltmeter increase as the homemade RF detector you have made detects RF frequencies used by spy devices.
Tips and warnings
- More or fewer turns of the wire around the toothpick will vary the frequency efficiencies of the homemade RF detector that is searching for radio frequencies being put out by spy devices.
- Turn off any cell phones or other portable electronic devices on your person, as they can interfere with the homemade RF detector.
