Pansies, with their rich, green foliage that grows 8 to 9 inches tall and up to 3 feet wide, are a popular flower to cultivate in the home garden. Five-petal blooms of white, pink, purple, blue, red, orange or yellow grace the plant, even in winter in milder climates. Propagating pansies is not difficult. The process is occasionally done through cuttings, but is most often done using seed. Plant pansy seeds in early spring for spring/summer blooms and in fall for winter/spring blooms. Spring planting is recommended for colder climates and fall for warmer climates.
Fill seed-sowing flats with seed-starting soil. Sow the seeds just below the surface of the soil.
Place the flats in the refrigerator for five days. Remove the flats from the refrigerator and place them in a dark area with temperatures between 18.3 and 21.1 degrees C. Water thoroughly, but not again until germination occurs.
Move the seedlings to a cool location with temperatures between 10.0 and 15.5 degrees C once they begin sprouting. Sprouting usually occurs 10 to 20 days after the flats are removed from the refrigerator.
Work the soil in the garden to about 8 inches in depth. Add compost to the soil.
Plant the pansy seedlings in an area of well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade once they are large enough to be transplanted. Plant them 6 inches apart.
