A chubby baby dressed in a tutu is tough to resist. Baby tutus make an adorable accessory for professional photographs, are fun for dress-up activities, and make a perfect gift for a baby girl. Baby tutus can sell for £26 or more in boutique stores, but a person with minimal craft skills can make several of her own tutus for that same price. Making your own also allows you to fully customise the tutu as far as the colours and accents go.

  1. 1

Measure around the waist of the baby. Subtract 1 inch from the measurement. Cut the elastic to match that measurement.

  2. 2

Sew the ends of the elastic band together. You can either hand-sew or use a sewing machine to hold the ends together.

  3. 3

Determine how long you want the tutu to hang on the baby. Double that measurement to determine how long to cut the strips of tulle. For example, if you want the tutu to hang down 8 inches, you cut the tulle into 16-inch strips.

  4. 4

Place the elastic band around a small chair back or your leg to hold it steady. Tie the tulle strips onto the elastic band using a knot to hold the pieces in place. Center the knot in the middle of each tulle strip for an even skirt on the tutu. Work around the elastic band, scooting the pieces of tulle right next to each other to create a full tutu skirt. Add tulle strips until you achieve the desired fullness.

  5. 5

Add the desired accents to the tutu. Ideas include ribbon strands hanging down in the tulle, bows tied from the ribbon or silk flowers or rosettes. Hot-glue or sew these accents onto the tutu.

Tips and warnings

  • The 6-inch wide rolls of tulle sold at craft stores are an ideal material for baby tutus. Choose one colour of tulle or alternate two or more colours of tulle strips for variety.
  • Baby tutus make a cute Halloween costume when paired with a simple top and tights.
