Instructions

  1. 1

Complete form DS-82. If you need a second passport because your first one expired or your name changed, then you need to use form DS-82. You can pick this form up at your local post office or you can download it from the Department of State's website. Fill out the form accurately, taking your time and ensuring your writing is legible. You can also fill the form out online and print it.

  2. 2

Once you have completed the form DS-82 you need to send it to the passport processing centre for your state with passport photos, fee and old passport. If you have lost your old passport you will need to report it so it can be remove validation. If you do have your passport you need to send it in. The validation will be removed, hole punched, and returned to you. Any documents you send with your application will be returned to you in most cases as well.

  3. 3

Mail the passport renewal application. Look for the address where you should mail your passport renewal application on the DS-82 form. Make sure you include all the necessary documentation and that you have included the proper fees. If you are requesting expedited service you will need to include that fee in the check or money order you send.

  4. 4

Expect a processing time of four to six weeks. You can check the current processing times on the Department of State's website, however it usually takes somewhere between four and six weeks to process and return your passport to you. You can also keep track of your passport's processing times by checking out the passport processing link on the website. Your passport will arrive in the mail and any documentation you sent will be sent in a separate envelope.
