The term "French fry" was first coined by Thomas Jefferson after eating a potato he described as being cooked in a French manner. While the French fry would seem to be American, the food was actually invented in Belgium.

At-Home Devices

You can buy a French fry cutter for your home relatively cheaply. There are several different kinds that you can buy from palm-sized to ones that you mount on your wall. These cutters typically cut one potato at a time into uniformly shaped fries. They come in either metal or plastic depending on what the cost is however, over time the plastic ones may break so consider that when looking to buy one.

Curly Fries

Cutters that can make curly fries are also available. Like an apple peeler, this cutter slices the potato along the outside and moves in to create the helical shape. These devices do not create uniformly shaped French fries but the way the potato is peeled gives the fries their curly shape.

Industrial Cutters

Industrial cutters are designed for mass production of French fries. They are generally made of stainless steel for its durability and can cut multiple potatoes at a time. Some are automated to make the process faster.
