Start your massage business part-time in an established spa, hotel or physiotherapy centre to build a client base. If you have happy customers, let them know you will be starting or have started your own business.

Referrals constitute a good percentage of your clientele, and networking is a great way to get referrals. You can join a professional business association in your area to help you build contacts. Make sure you have business cards that you can hand out at your networking sessions.

Print out flyers advertising your business and some sort of promotion such as half price massages for first-time customers. You may not make much money on the initial massage, but if you do a good job, you may get repeat clients.

Advertise with vouchers in local free business magazines. Many businesses that advertise in these magazines offer some kind of discount or promotion, so you should do that, too. Look through one of the books you intend to use for ideas and contact information.

Advertise on the radio. If you can, advertise when people are commuting home from work. They are probably tired and may be caught in rush-hour traffic. An ad for a massage will sound particularly enticing at that moment.

Advertising in the Yellow Pages and other local directories is a mixed bag. People are used to looking there for services; however, the Yellow Pages can be expensive. Prices vary depending on your area, so you would need to call them to check out their prices.

Use social networking sites. You can advertise your business and give free health tips, for example, to your online network of friends on Twitter of Facebook.

Advertise in your local newspaper. Weeklies or monthlies in a specific area are a great place to advertise because you are only paying to reach the people in your area. If the paper also runs feature stories, ask them if they can do one on your business. It may held that you are advertising with them.
