The FJ1200 was produced between 1986 and 1993 to fill Yamaha's need for a large-displacement, sport-touring motorcycle -- a blending providing high-performance power with a less aggressive seating position for added comfort on longer trips. All FJ1200 models used a unique lever-release system to secure the motorcycle's seat to the frame. While a locking mechanism with a release lever is visible under the right side of the seat, an additional lever under the left side of the seat must be released to remove the seat entirely.
Insert the motorcycle's ignition key into the seat lock mechanism, under the right side of the seat. Twist the key clockwise to unlock the mechanism.

Pull up the seat release levers, located under both sides of the seat. Lift the rear of the seat up, then pull it toward the rear of the motorcycle. Set the seat aside.
Slide the tab built into the front of the seat into the slot cut into the frame below the fuel tank. Lower the seat onto the motorcycle.
Press down firmly on the rear portion of the seat until both seat levers click into a locked position. Tug the seat upward to ensure that the seat is locked securely in place.
Twist the ignition key counterclockwise, then pull the key out of the seat lock mechanism.
